Members-Only Full Moon Family Hike
(1.5 Hours / Easy / 1 Mile)
Join naturalist and author Heather Montgomery for an evening in the forest. Come prowl the moonlit trail, discover the power of night vision, and experience the world of nocturnal animals. With flashlights tucked in our pockets, we will stroll through the Harvest Square Preserve and explore a side of the forest most people miss. If the clouds cooperate, we will sit in awe under the stars and hear ancient legends.

Every  Thursday night run or walk in Research Park. We start from Hudson Alpha at 5:30pm. We normally use the parallel parking on Genome Way (road between Jackson center and the Hudson Alpha building) and start from there. If that is full, there is parking behind both buildings.

Runners and walkers welcome. Headlights, reflective clothing and blinking lights very much recommended

First 2.5 miles of both routes are the same, starting west, looping to the north and coming back on Mark C. Smith and then Discovery back towards Moquin. 3 mile returns to the start on Moquin.5 mile continues down discovery to the bottom of Exployer, then turn left loop around to the east and turn left on the other end of Discovery and then return on Moquin.

Dive deep into Alum Hollow on South Green Mountain. Land Trust Board Member Mike Dalen will start out on top and hike down Talus Trail to the valley floor, exploring several nooks and crannies on the way back out. Bring water & snacks.

You can explore Huntsville history by examining remnants from the past at the Land Trust of North Alabama’s Wade Mountain Nature Preserve. This 2.5 mile guided hike and archaeological discovery will be led by Archaeologist Ben Hoksbergen.

Fanning and Jones Valley Loop Hike at Blevins Gap

Enjoy a good uphill walk with Rick Rodriguez along some of the newer Blevins Gap Trails. We’ll enjoy the beautiful flora along Jones Valley Trail as we make our way up towards the top of Huntsville Mountain. Rick has adopted and cares for both the Fanning and Stevenson trails on this part of the preserve and will give you plenty of insight on what makes this area so unique.

Join Alisa Koken from the Cook Museum of Natural Science to learn outdoor basics such as how to read a topographic map, what to include in your pack, the best gear for hiking, and how to identify Northern Alabama’s poisonous plants and animals.
