Put your skills to the test and join dendrologist (the study of trees & shrubs) Ken Ward on Monte Sano Nature Preserve for a morning of leafless tree identification and learn how to identify trees in the dead of winter. (2.5 hours / Moderate / 1.5 miles)

There’s a lot to learn from exploring the outdoors! Bring the kids out for an educational nature hike led by Madison County Schools STEM Coach Tim Gels. We’ll discuss the plants and animals that call Rainbow Mountain Nature Preserve home. Bring a sack lunch and end the hike with lunch in the pavilion! (2 hours / Easy to Moderate / 1.5 miles)

Everyone is welcome to the Sierra Club Tuesday Night Hike! We depart at 6:00 pm sharp from the Monte Sano State Park Hikers’ parking lot on Nolen Avenue (get there early to sign-in). There is a small fee to enter the park and all dogs must be on a leash while in the parking lot and during the hike. Though not strenuous, hikes may be vigorous and range from 3 to 5 miles, depending on the sunset. Bring water and snacks. Dress for the weather, rain cancels. Come experience a calm, meditative practice that consists of a slow, gentle and intentional walk through the trees and the forest atmosphere, stopping along the way for guided practices that include engaging our five basic senses, including the gentlest of stretches and movement. Sierra Club – Beginners Campout on Monte Sano @ Monte Sano State Park

Sierra Club - Beginners Campout on Monte Sano @ Monte Sano State Park

Join us for the second event in our Camping/Backpacking 101 series. This will be a Campout only, no backpacking required. We will be group camping on a primitive (no water or electrical hook ups) campsite in the Monte Sano State Park. This is a tent/hammock camping event, designed to give beginner and/or returning campers a chance set up and try out their gear in a safe environment with some experienced campers to help with anything tricky.

There will be a camp cooking demonstration covering dutch oven cooking on a campfire and using embers to cook food in foil packets.

At a minimum you will need:
Tent/sleeping-pad/sleeping-bag or hammock system
Light source and/or headlamp
Food/snacks/beverages
Weather appropriate clothes
$5 per person for the State Park camping fee

You may want:
Pillow
Camp chair
Cooler

Join local Historian Bruce Martin on journey through Monte Sano history. You’ll begin at the old Monte Sano Dump, travel to Fagan Springs, visit the Monte Sano Pumphouse and Hospital Hollow, stop at the Railroad Bed Megatrestle, and finally hike up the old wagon road before returning on Bluffline Trail. (3 hours / Difficult / 3.5 miles)
